Sarah Brenay - Masterclass 9/17

Sam Meredith
Posture is caved in - especially the shoulders. Definitely needs some gorilla treatment. I feel like the upper register is getting pinched for some reason. You have to learn to flip up there with ease and without tightening anywhere. If we can just free up the voice in that higher range you'll have such a nice, consistent tone. When Cindy started working with you, doing the dancing and roller coaster exercises, I could hear some improvement. I can tell that you wanted to do what she was asking, but it didn't look like you were buying into it 100%. I think the problem is that you're trying to control your voice, you want to manhandle it into doing what you want, but that's just not how it works. You can't force the voice. "Think pitch, and allow the voice to come," that's what Cindy always tells me and it's SO HARD to do. Especially when you're worried about what will come out if you do let go. But she's right! Keep working on it.

Vowels are very wide and bright, very musical theater style (surprise surprise) but doesn't fit so well with classical pieces. Practice in a mirror and watch out for that! The body is a little slumped. I feel like the voice is not being supported with the whole body - creating a shallow sound. Some ascending lines tend to go flat! Gotta watch those. Cindy's help with your posture worked wonders. Luke - you look so much better when you sing with your shoulders back - looks much stronger. The breathing exercise that Cindy was doing with you was starting to have an effect, but you'll need to keep working on it for it to sink in. Nice work!

  1. Thanks for your comments, Sarah! Yeah, I struggle with the musical theater singing that creeps in still... You're so right though and it's very encouraging. Thanks for your very constructive and helpful critiques!
