Sarah Boucher VRH Critiques
Luke: Luke's eyes were very lively and he clearly knew what he was singing about. However, I felt like he held himself in a way that made him appear self conscious. It was like his eyes were telling one story and his body another. I like that Luke's tone is so free and effortless. I could see his stomach move but his breaths did not remain expanded throughout the whole body during the piece. I enjoyed watching his progression as Thomas worked with him. I especially liked when he told him to speak the text, this is something I need to apply to my own singing. When he told Luke to sing in his chest voice, I could not believe the difference. While I loved his tone before, it had so much presence in it after that and it did not feel as held back! Another thing I liked about his coaching was when we had Luke make a connection to the piece. After he told Luke to sing it like he was singing his favorite song in the shower, Luke's emotions came out even more in the piece. I could slowly see his walls coming down and as an audience member that is pretty neat! He did very well, and was willing to be vulnerable and make mistakes! Great job Luke!
Elizabeth: Liz's tone is simply splendid, so free and bright. You could tell that she knew the piece well and had made connections to it to make it more meaningful. Something that I noticed, was that she tends to smack her lips together when she is not singing and raises her eyebrows when notes go high. I also noticed that her breath was "bucket" like and at times very audible. I liked when Thomas had her sing on an "o", that made her establish more consistency in where she placed notes in her voice. It made it more cohesive. I think that while this piece was stunning in her voice, if she is able to transfer that "o" sound to all her notes it will make it even better. Lovely job Liz!
