Sarah Boucher TC: Chapter 9 Summary
Chapter Summary:
A master teacher possesses what Coyle calls the four virtues: the matrix, perceptiveness, the GPS reflex and theatrical honesty. The matrix is a teacher's knowledge that they have gained and gathered over the years. They should be able to use this matrix to target student's problems and find solutions. Master teachers also possess a perceptiveness to target the student's weaknesses, help them fix it and monitor their learning habits so that they can teach them in a way that best suits their personality. The GPS reflex is the way in which master teacher's give commands and directions to their students. They are very clear and concise telling the student exactly what they need to do. Theatricality is how master coaches tell student's the truth about their performances.
Key Points:
Master coaches know what techniques to use on their students that suit them best.
Although some activities require different coaching techniques (ie Soccer and Violin) the overall goal is the same: to get students to a point where they can become their own coaches.
Different skills require different types of circuitry, which affect how they are taught.
Key Terms:
matrix
flexible circuit skills
consistent circuit skills
Making Connections:
All of the tactics my teachers have used on me over the last few years are finally making sense! As I look back on the times I have felt like I have progressed the most as a singer it has not been the times when I have been overly praised by my teachers, it has been when they have been direct and honest with me. I want to be the kind of teacher that when I compliment my students, they feel so good because it is a rare thing. I want to find that balance of toughness, while still letting them know I care. This chapter had so many great techniques that I can apply with my students someday. I especially liked the GPS reflex.
