Sarah Boucher Lesson Summary 9/20
This weeks lesson was really great! I love when you walk away feeling excited to practice! We talked about a few items of business and then Laurie taught me some more vocalizes. I had come to the lesson a bit warmed up but felt extremely tight and wanted more guidance with my warm up. She had me distract myself as I began to warm up by raising my knee and touching it. This helped me to release tension in my body and not tense up my throat. We focused a lot on the position of the larynx which is really helping me release the tension in my throat. The warmups helped me so much, they took away my tension and helped me to not try to "muscle" my sound. I loved it that when I began to get tight she would stop me and give me ways to stop the tension, for example adding a primal uh before the scale to help lower the larynx. We worked on one of my German pieces. I had been practicing it all week and had felt very tight, especially as it is in the middle of my range. Laurie had me focus on my jaw and had me monitor it by placing my had in a v shape under my lower lip. I could feel my jaw jutting out. She had me speak the text focusing on having a "dumb jaw" and then would alternate with singing the text verses speaking it. The piece felt so much better than it had been, and I was excited that just monitoring my jaw really helped to make a difference in the piece! She gave me ways to practice this and suggested a lot of speaking the text with a "dumb jaw". She also told me to tip my head back and sing for a bit to get my jaw in a more relaxed place! That really helped!
For this week my goals are to focus on my jaw with a lot of repetitious speaking of the text! Next week, I am going to have more song analysis sheets done and be ready to work on my other German pieces.
New Vocalizes:
--Fat face fwa
--Oh-no-no (adding primal Uh when I got too tight up high)
--Inhaled K - Pantomime - ah descending (use arm to create fluidity in the scale)
--Two-Toe (Pretend fist is going down throat)
