Sam TC Epilogue

Sam
Chapter Summary- The process of skill development through myelination in the brain by the means of deep practice can apply to any and every skill in a variety of fields. This has been shown to be true in the field of education. When teachers are effective in igniting a students desire to learn and employ deep practice as part of their teaching kids learn more effectively. The reason that Finland has such a successful education system is because all of the teachers are highly respected master coaches who understand how to best help kids to learn. In business it has been shown that businesses who employ deep practice by continual seeking out and fixing errors are more successful. Toyota, for example has risen to become the world's foremost auto manufacturer as a result of this approach. Deep practice can even have a good effect on psychology. It has been proven that those who seem to be shy by nature or lack social skills can in fact develop them if they practice. Even elderly people can fight off the effects of dementia through continually myelinating new circuits in their brains. Being familiar with the process of talent development is also very helpful when raising children. Since skill is insulation that wraps certain circuits in our brains depending on how much we fire the circuit we can understand that no child is a 'natural born' anything. Therefore, as parents we simply need to help our children understand how talent is developed and then help them figure out what they have a passion for.
Key Concept- Skill development and the process of myelination is in play constantly. We can use the talent code to understand how to develop talent of any kind.
Key Terms- Myelin, Deep Practice
Making Connections- The principles taught in this book can be applied to any skill in any area of life, so it makes sense to keep them in mind whenever I'm developing any kind of skill and not just a skill that will contribute to my talent as a singer.
