Summary - The ability to connect with someone on a deep and trusting level in a matter of seconds is a rare quality that few possess. Tom Martinez, a retired junior college football coach is such a person. Because of his abilities, he was asked to prep a college quarterback for his pre-draft workouts and figure out his potential for becoming a great football star. Upon first meeting Martinez, the football player was suspicious. However, Martinez quickly broke the ice through understanding the football player, being honest, and humor. He was able to quickly form a bond of trust which enabled him to prepare the football player, and he was then signed on for playing for the Raiders in the NFL. Martinez shows us not only the importance of creating a connection of trust, but also how to teach to the individual's needs where they can benefit the most.
Key Concept: "Sixty percent of what you teach applies to everybody... The trick is how you get that sixty percent to the person. If I teach you, I'm concerned about what you think and how you think. I want to teach you how to learn in a way that's right for you."
Key Terms: learning process, connection
Making Connections: When I teach, I need to teach a person and not a lesson. The connection between me and my student is so critical, because they have to trust me in order to believe the things that I am telling them are true and will work for them.
