A Soprano On Her Head: Chapter 2
Emily Cottam
Chapter Summary: In this chapter, the author discusses the power that our “personal judges” have over our ability to be at our best in any sort of setting--they represent the limitations and expectations that pressure us and prevent us from reaching our full potential. She describes a form of meditation in which you very consciously push out these judges and become aware of how insignificant these negative feelings are compared to how much power you have as an individual to control and ignore those emotions. Becoming aware of what inhibits you gives you the greater opportunity to relinquish them. She also talks about how these judges can become voices of encouragement and a signal for improvement by changing the way you view your inhibitions and viewing them as strengths.
Key Concepts: Becoming aware of what inhibits you, confronting them, and turning your weaknesses into strengths.
Key Terms: Personal judges
Making Connections: I can use the information I learned in this chapter during my performances because I am often unable to perform at my best because I am so afraid of being judged badly for how I sing/perform; I tend to be very self-conscious when I’m in front of other people, and almost always shows in my performance. However, I have had moments when I get up to perform and I am extremely carefree and I’m not worried about what others think and my performance quality goes up. I think the meditation methods the author describes could be helpful for me, particularly on a day with a performance.
