Elizabeth Tait Masterclass 9.17.13

Sam Meredith
Breathing: Breath doesn't seem like it's an aid to the voice.  As he focused on being brave, it seemed his breath started to free up.
Intonation: The pitch suffered on ascending intervals, because the low notes weren't in a high note space.  So flipping up was labored.  I was also annoyed by some scooping, especially on the first notes of phrases.  That really was a hinderance to freedom.
Timbre: I always think of timbre in terms of shapes.  So his felt like he was throwing a platter at me, in a very good way.  And that platter is covered in velour.  It's a naturally very appealing sound.  But I also agree with Cindy's assessment of the "rrr" Kermit-y-ness in his voice.
Diction: I can't judge Czech, but I wish I could have gotten a better idea of how the language sounds.  It sounded blasé from the audience.  I wish he would dig into the consonants, but not get chewy and sloppy.
Expressiveness: He was a bit buried in his music.  Didn't get much expressiveness from him.  I thought that maybe his dancing would have been aided if he got his face involved.
Master Class Improvement: He wasn't picking up too well on the purpose of the dancing exercise.  I think that a bit of movement work for him would help his eventual stage career.  And it would obviously also free him up.  Sam, it's time to take modern dance class!
Overall Performance: His voice is so soothing to listen to.  However, I wouldn't say his presence as a performer is quite soothing just yet.

Breathing: It seems your neck is a bit locked.  But wonderful posture in the shoulders.  Just nice carriage in general.  That's not really breathing advice, but whatevs.
Intonation: No problems for me
Timbre: Your tone seemed flayed to me.  Like a rope that is frayed at the end.  But it's an improvement since I've heard you last.  The timbre gets less frayed with more body intensity.
Diction: I appreciated the energy in the unvoiced consonants, but I would like equal energy in the voiced consonants.  I also head some vowels that were dip-thongy, making the Italian sound American.  Especially "bene"
Expressiveness: Good introduction!  But don't be apologetic with your posture.  Great engagement in the piano introduction, but don't give away the pianist's mistakes with your eyes.  The direction (point exercise), you were pointing in a tension like way.  Ask me for more details
Masterclass Improvement: The help Cindy gave you at the beginning immediately improved your sound.  I can sense that your mind completely understands the concepts, but your body doesn't understand it quite yet.  It will come.
Overall Performance: I love that you care about singing.  Thanks for sharing that with us.
