Caitlin Craig VRH Critiques September 5, 2013

1. Emily Floyd
2. Breathing: good quiet breaths, phrasing was pretty graceful, I think the exit of her breaths were what she could focus on.
3. Intonation: good, however, I think she could use a higher and more forward resonant place throughout the whole song.
4. Timbre: covered,
5. Diction: overall good pronunciation of german.  I would like to hear more of a higher placement of the german with a higher lift of the soft palate.
6. Expressiveness: there was a quiet but powerful focus that I thought conveyed the message of the song.  I enjoyed this quiet intensity.
8. Overall performance:

1. Amber Denslow
2. Breathing: I think the 1st breath of the song was good, she had it low, and quiet, but the ones following really lacked the release and openess of the rib cage.  This would also help them to be quieter.
3. Intonation: Fairly good.
4. Timbre: Fuzzy, covered, constricted.
5. Diction: I am no expert on french diction, but I did find her vowels to hard to be distinguished in the higher tessitura.
6. Expressiveness: I think she definitely felt a strong need to tell the story.  But I feel like it strained her performance, and it wasn't completely natural.
8. Overall performance:

1. Amber
2. Breathing: I got the impression that she was holding her breath, rather than feeling that release.
3. Intonation: "you see" certain words were under pitch.  When holding "high and proud"it felt slightly underpitch.  She could try to keep the life of the soft palate to fix this.
4. Timbre:
5. Diction: good, for the context of the musical theater piece.
6. Expressiveness: I didn't feel like she had a significant introduction, or connection to the text.  It seemed like her focus was elsewhere.
8. Overall performance: I think she had the right diction, but placement could help to improve intonation, and give a vitality to the piece.

1. Michael Lechner
2. Breathing: I think he was nervous, because his breath was very constricted.  He could improve this by feeling those "dump moments" in the rib cage, and lower back muscles.  Think happy breaths!
3. Intonation: It was good, but when his vibrato came in it became wobbly.  Also placement was very swallowed, which could have contributed to the pitch difficulties.
4. Timbre: tense, wobbly.
5. German pronunciation needs some work throughout.  It needs a higher placement in the voice.
6. Expression: He looked scared and nervous.  I'm not sure if this is what he was going for, or i he was genuinely scared and nervous.  But I could hear these feelings in his breath and voice.
8. Overall performance: Much potential, but thinking happy breaths, higher forward placement would really help, and make singing easier for him.

1. Jared Daley
2. breath: WOW.
3. Intonation: spot on.
4. Timbre: power house.
5. Diction: good confident introduction, which set a very strong focus for the song.
6. Expression: Killed it.  You could see the fire burning behind his eyes.
8. Overall: I love watching Jared sing musical theater.  He has really found his niche.

1. Sarah Gee
2. Breath: overall they were okay breaths, but on sustained high notes she could keep her rib cage a little more released.  I think that would help release tension in her breath.
3. Intonation: good.
4. Timbre: I really like the timbre of Sarah's voice, I feel like for the most part it is in a high resonant space, and stays very clear in most of her phrases.
5. Diction: introduction could be a little more confident, but I felt like I recognized words, but I'm not sure I gained the complete message of the text.  This could be improved by strengthening her poetic phrasing.
6. Expression: I think she had feelings running through her head, but I'm not sure if she had real experiences, or detailed enough stories backing her up.  It was pleasant, but it didn't wow me.
8. Overall: I am excited to hear Sarah's improvement in this school year, I think she has a lot of potential.  But I think she needs to gain a little more confidence in herself and her ability.

1. Jordan Davis
2. Breath: Breaths were low and quiet at the beginning, but became shallow towards the middle till the end.
3. Intonation: good.
4. Timbre: I'm not sure.
5. Diction: alright, I felt like he slingshot some words, which didn't make sense to me.
6. Expression: He was comical, but phrasing didn't make sense to me.
8. Overall: breathing and phrasing could be improved to make singing easier, and to make the performance ironic.  Cause his song is full of irony.

1. Aubrianne Dunn
2. Breath: shallow and high. I would like to see a lot more release in her breath.  I felt like she was almost squeezing her breath, and I would like to see what her sound was like if she felt more of those dump moments.
3. Intonation: at the beginning of words it was good, but I saw her adjust her jaw and tense the back of her neck to reach pitch.  I think she could achieve this without the adjustment, and just better preparation in breath and the "internal suck"
4. Timbre: breathy.
5. Diction: Alright, dipthongs weren't so gracefull.
6. Expression: I think that it was fair.  But not specific enough.
8. Overall: Confident entrance, but lacks the breath release, and internal suck.
