Caitlin Craig Masterclass 9/17

Sam Meredith
Sam seemed to have very nice low and quiet breaths.  He has a rich timbre, and precise intonation (except for one note that sounded like "machi"), but I did sense a lack of engagement in the lower body.  His sound has a lot of potential, but I would like to see him feel the music more in his body, and really commit to that feeling.  Cindy worked with him to "choreograph" the piece to engage his lower and upper body, which helped some, but I didn't feel like he was completely committed to the exercise.  Cindy also addressed the concept of internalizing musical shape.  I thought maybe instead of choreographing the shape, maybe he could try drawing the melodic shape with his eyes, it might help him grasp the whole roller coaster concept.  I think once he engages his entire body and opens his posture, not only will his voice have more expression but it will also keep his vibrato spinning evenly, rather than approaching the high notes unprepared.

Luke Shepherd
Luke had quieter breaths than I've seen him have in the past.  Although he still lacked the feeling of opening his shoulders, I think he has really improved.  The words "car" and "cor" lacked breath energy and fell flat, but overall the intonation was pretty accurate.  His timbre was much more focused and free.  I know that Luke was trying to be expressive through his face, but I didn't see that same expression in his body.  Cindy had him resist her, in order to find the shape of the musical phrase, it seemed to help him discover the concept.  Italian was smooth, but I feel like there was a bit of a diphthong in his open e's specifically while his was sustaining the vowel in an ascending phrase.
