Taylee Beckstead
When I watched Taylee sing the first time, I could tell that she didn't have the proper release in her back and rib cage. It looked like her breath was constricted, an because of that I felt like the musical phrases were choppy and lacked the grace that we talked about in class. Maybe she could try keeping her breath low and rib cage open by thinking happy thoughts or breaths. After Cindy pointed out that her shoulder blades were involved and tight, it made a lot of sense. I sensed some intonation problems during her first time through, which I thought lacked the breath energy and height of the soft palate (which very well could have been caused by the tension in the shoulders). Scooping up to the pitch, instead of articulating directly on the pitch was also something I heard.
Since I am no professional at French diction I don't have anything super helpful to say other than I think at times she had a bit of a diphthong in her vowels, I think they could have been clearer and purer French vowels. I noticed this because I am often an offender of this exact diction mistake. I didn't find her performance to be extremely compelling emotionally, but I can sense that this is because it is a new song. However, I wonder if some of the choppiness and tension in the breath would change if she were thinking about what she was conveying with the text. After some excercises with Cindy her breath seemed to be more released, but I think she could practice it even more to get a more released and enjoyable sound.
