Brooke's Master Class critiques 9/24/13

Emily Floyd-
Emily has a very beautiful tone and her low notes are awesome! Her high notes though need some work. Then Tom got up and told Emily that he voice is beautiful and he can feel the emotion of the song coming from her but wants it even more. What would help is to give more energy. Once he told her to make it louder she sounded just as good. Piano is not a volume it is a color. He used "the wooden"and sang it the correct way, then did it the way she did, and then would do the correct way again. Working on her diction made her voice more focused, which produced a much better sound. He wants her to sing the same way that she speaks. Once he fixed her jaw jutting forward she was able to get that the first leap and got the second one better. The more you give the more you find that you have.

Sarah
Her sustained notes are beautiful as well as her high notes. Her diction was actually really good. I felt that she new what her song was about but her breathing is a little shallow. Then Tom got up and told her that she needs to breath in rhythm. If you are every working with a conductor or a pianist the breathing in rhythm helps signal that you are going to start singing. Tom then told her she needs to take a fuller breath, when she did this her tone was much more stable. It was not something I noticed until she fixed it. Something interesting that I am finding is that when you fix one thing in your voice other things tend to become fixed as well. He instructed her to go back and forth between speaking and singing and to make the breaths the same.

Sarah Low
She has a very beautiful light voice. Her voice has a very beautiful tone and I really liked watching her. I want her to connect with her chest voice more and it is a bit breathy but I liked it. He asked her if she was having fun when she sang like she was having fun her voice became more focused and it was so much more enjoyable to watch and listen to. He worked with her dynamics and it made such a difference. He mentioned how you need to take the audience with you. Even with just fifteen minutes of being with her she sounded so much better.
