Bric Slade TC: Chapter 7

Bric Slade TC: Chapter 7

Summary: It can not be understated that a strict regiment of deep practice in the sweet spot is the key to success. Motivation is the fuel we need to start practicing in the sweet spot. These two things are what make up success but how successful are we talking? Dedication, or more pointedly, discipline is the speed limit that we set for ourselves. If we want to get somewhere really fast with our skill, we have to be willing to set a high speed limit, aka: discipline. The KIPP program is one of these programs. It incorporates discipline in almost every aspect of the learning experience right down to the degree the students have to hold their binders as they walk down the hall. Not only are they surrounded with discipline but they are also surrounded by constant reminders of what they need to do in order to be ready for college. College is mentioned throughout the day so the students are constantly thinking about it and continually changing their behavior to be more in line with that of a college student. Because of their strict discipline in learning the KIPP program has come away with an 80% success rate for students accepted into college.

Key Terms: Discipline, Motivation, Primal Cues

Key Concept: Most important part of teaching? Motivate students to be disciplined

Connections: If I want to be a great teacher I need to constantly be providing, somehow the motivational fuel to help my students carry on, and not only that I need to help them know what to expect, discipline wise, given how fast they desire to improve.
