Chapter summary: This chapter, entitled "the Talent Whisperers," is the beginning chapter in the third part of this book entitled "master coaching." Daniel Coyle identifies in this chapter some of the attributes of master teachers. Coyle begins by explaining "the ESP of Hans Jensen;" he cites Jensen's ability to sense the individual needs of his students as an attribute of master teaching. Coyle then uses Basketball coach John Wooden as an example of a master teacher. Coyle cites Wooden's teaching style as the secret to his team's success; Wooden's "do this, not this, but this" instruction. Coyle concludes this chapter by identifying another aspect of master teaching: inspiring motivation, for which he uses Mary Epperson as an example.
Key Concept: Master teachers, or talent whisperers, sense the individual needs of their pupils, give repeated instruction, and inspire motivation.
Key Terms: Talent whisperers, "a Wooden"
Making Connections: Sometimes, I teach others. From this, I can see that I need to 1. sense the individual needs of my pupils, 2. give instructive feedback, and 3. inspire motivation.
