I had a really good experience performing all the exercises designed to release the different joints as explained in What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body. I think posture has always been one thing that has confused me, so having this book to clear things up has been really helpful. I really liked how each exercise gave me the opportunity to feel what it is like to have my joints in extreme positions on both ends of the spectrum and have experiences singing in those positions. I know that I don't actually sing in such positions, but i do have some of those problems when I sing just to a less extreme degree. It was sort of shocking to hear how big the difference was when I returned to a neutral position after being in one of the more extreme ones. It was shocking, therefore, to think that I ever allowed myself to have my shoulders rounded forward (just one example) to any degree because I now know how it affects my singing and my breathing. I also feel like I was able to free some of the tension in my legs that I notice sometimes just by having a better positioned back.
Overall, the thing that I liked most about all these exercises is that they put me in a position that felt natural. I didn't feel like I had to do anything special--I didn't feel like assuming good singing posture was physical exercise. Once I found the neutral position for all my joints (I especially found the revelation about the lumbar being in the center of my body helpful) breathing seemed to just happen when it needed to and singing seemed to be so much more effortless than it is normally.
