Taylee. Summary: We are constantly receiving signals that affect our decisions. When one of these sparks a sense of belonging, we, being the social creatures that we are, have a sudden outpouring of desire. Without this desire, we lack the needed energy to perform in a deep practice state. Those signals, or cues, that we received work more effectively if they aren't consciously recognized. If they go un-noticed they can then become a part of us.
Key Terms: motivational fuel. ignition. hair trigger.
Key Concepts: Once we see that a skill is possible and attainable, we think "why can't I?".
"I want X later, so I better do Y like crazy right now."
Energy is vital to sustaining a state of deep practice.
Making Connections: I can't think of the very first time that music inspired me. But I can think of many times through out my life that music became that much more important to me. Looking back, after each of those experiences, I added a level of focus to music making. A better personal example would be volleyball. 7th grade was the first year that volleyball was offered as a school sport. I had no intentions of trying out until one of my friends called to ask me why I wasn't at tryouts that day. Suddenly I went into a panic! My friends were going to do something that I wasn't! So I went the next day and worked my butt off! I was a whole day behind everyone and I needed to make the team so that I would be missing out.
