Chapter 5 Summary: Deep practice is essential to developing skill. Deep practice requires a great amount of energy. So, one must find the motivation, which makes it possible to have the energy needed for deep practice. There are several factors in our environments that can help us find that motivation. these factors are known as primal cues and although they work with us on a subconscious level, they help release massive amounts of energy that leads to effective talent development. One important primal cue is a desire for future belonging. This is present when we see someone who has talent and we have a desire to achieve that same level of excellence. Our desire to become part of an elite group drives us. Lack of safety can also be a primal cue that motivates hard work. This is a reason why many who suffer the loss of a parent in early life go on to become very successful people. A desire to keep up with your peers is another primal cue. When we see others who are better than we are we are more able to summon the desire and the motivation to improve. Another primal cue is that of scarcity. When an individual feels that their opportunity to develop a given talent is something that doesn't come along every day, they don't want to squander it and are thus more motivated.
Key Concept: When we want to develop talent we need to have good habits of deep practice. The motivation that can give us the energy for deep practice springs from an array of primal cues that subconsciously ignite our desire for improvement.
Key Terms: Ignition, Primal Cues, Future Belonging, Scarcity
Making Connections: Although the primal cues work mostly subconsciously I think it will really help to know about them. Knowing what motivated me to pursue singing in the first place will help me have consistent motivation even when it seems hard to find the energy to practice correctly.
