Jaron Putnam Chapter 4 TC

Chapter 4 Summary

Chapter Summary: The process of deep practice involves a few important elements. The most important of this is to break down or "chunk" all the aspects of the skill you are trying to develop. This takes a knowledge of what you want to accomplish. If you know what you want you will know how to break the skill down. After breaking down the skill one must progress through each chunk at a very slow pace until you have mastered it. As you repeat these steps and chunks you will naturally be able to do the skill at a faster pace and before you know it you will have come very far in the skill in a relatively short amount of time.

Key Concepts:
Skill developing is best done by dissecting a skill and working on the individual components. As you do this, you will develop the skill much faster than by just repeating the motion, or myelinating the wrong nerves.

Key Terms:
Chunking
Deep Practice

Making Connections:

What I have been thinking about the most is that to know how to appropriately chunk your skill you must first have a vision of what you want. Visualizing in your mind is very powerful is used in the right way, and I want to get better at having a vision of what I want so that I can appropriately chunk my skill.
