Ben Shaw chapter 4 TC

Chapter Summary: In this chapter, Coyle begins by explaining the concept of the "Holy Sh[oo]t Effect (HSE). This concept, as described by Coyle, is our reaction to seeing unanticipated talent. It is, in his own words, a "mix of disbelief, admiration, and envy..." After explaining this concept, Coyle then identifies three rules of Deep Practice. The first rule, "chunk it up," refers to our ability to understand what we're doing and make connections to relate the task or the object to itself. The second rule is self-explanatory: "repeat it." The third rule refers to the principle of real internalization: "feel it." Coyle talks about these rules as well as the HSE in this chapter.
Key points: Chunking things up, repetition, and internalization are three important rules to deep practice
Key Terms: HSE, Chunk
Making Connections: I can see from this that an important part of my practice will be to apply the third principle and "feel" the music/technique.
