Jaron Putnam Chapter 3 TC

Chapter 3 Summary:
Most people throughout time have viewed certain individuals as "geniuses" in certain fields. This chapter eliminates the idea of geniuses and explains that these individuals are actually individuals who have spent ample time deep practicing, growing myelin around their nerve endings. This chapter helps eliminate the myth that you have to be born with natural talent to become amazing at a certain skill. Some of the most amazing and incredibly talented individuals are not exempt from this process. Even Michelangelo deep practiced his skill to greatness. The Bronte sisters are another example of people who spent time when they were little wrapping myelin through a lot of deep practice.

Key Concept:
Those who are considered exceptionally talented in any given field are those who have put in the hours to myelinate the appropriate nerve endings. They aren't just geniuses who didn't have to work hard.

Key Terms:
Myelin Beings
Oligodendrocytes

Making Connections:

I need to remember that nothing is really free when it comes to talent building. If I want to be talented at something, then I must put in the appropriate hours of the appropriate type of practice to get where I want to be.
