Emily F. TC chapter 8 summary:Teachers are crucial to the ability of a learner to build skill. Good teachers, or "talent whisperers", have built skill in teaching itself. One teaching skill is the ability to recognize and meet the needs of the student. Another is the ability to manage time and give the students the most effective deep practice possible. In the Gallimore and Tharp case study of Wooden, they "recorded and coded 2326 discrete acts of teaching. Of them, a mere 6.9 percent were compliments. Only 6.6 percent were expressions of displeasure. But 75 percent were pure information: what to do, how to do it, when to intensify an activity." Wooden modeled the right way to do things for his athletes, with great success. Another teaching skill is the ability to love the student. Love of the skill and of the student keeps igniting the motivation needed for growth. This is shown by those beginning teachers labeled "average" in terms of skill, but who are able to help a student love what they're doing.
Key Concept: Master coaches are important in the skill-building of a student.

Making Connections:I think back to my favorite teachers throughout school. The ones I remember best are the ones who loved me and made me work hard! As a mother, a lot of times I want to make things easy for my kids, but I recognize the value of letting them struggle through. As a teacher, I want to be able to help ignite motivation and give my students opportunities for deep practice. I know it will take time and practice to build the skills to be a good teacher.
