Chapter 8 Summary: Good habits of deep practice aren't developed out of nothing. When someone attempts to develop a talent it is important that they receive helpful instruction and motivation from a teacher or coach. Teachers, like students, must be dedicated to their students success to ensure that they customize their teaching style to meet the needs of each individual student. A good teacher also encourages good habits of deep practice through their instructions to students. This can be accomplished by issuing targeted information that helps the student identify mistakes and correct them. It is, therefore also important that a teacher is able to be an example to the student of target behavior. Furthermore, it is essential that the instructor requires the student to repeat important skills to encourage their development and show them that this is an important component of good practice. Teachers also play an important role in the ignition process. Teachers can do a lot to ensure that students find and maintain the motivation necessary to continue in good practice habits. This can be accomplished through proper praise, not being overly critical, and setting high yet achievable expectations for progress.
