Brooke TC 4
Brooke Summary Ch. 4- there are three main rules to deep practice the first is chunking. One step at a time is a common phrase used to help us chunk. We learn one thing then build on it over and over again. If we can learn recognize patterns that is when progress towards deep practice is gained. The second rule is to repeat your skill. It has been thought that to be an expert you have to practice 3-5 hours daily. But according to Ch. 4 it isn’t the same if you deep practice. You can learn more in less time as long as you are in your sweet spot. Rule three is Learn to feel it. If you can feel your mistakes then you can go back and fix them. If we are able to let ourselves struggle we learn faster and more.
Key Concept- Three rules, 1. Chunking 2. Repeat 3. Learn to feel it.
Key Terms- HSE, chunking
Making Connections- When in the practice room I need to “stop fooling around” as said in the book and use my time as productively as possible. Chunking to me makes a lot of sense. If you can get one phrase down then build on that. Repeat patterns of music not in the same order but differenciate them. That will help me learn to my best advantage.
