DC chapter 3 summary
9/3/13
Summary: "Skill is insulation that wraps neural circuits and grows according to certain signals." Circuits that are fired more urgently and frequently will be more fine tuned. Genes don't create codes for skills such as playing music because that would be inefficient. We have a choice in what skills we develop because we choose which circuits to fire repeatedly. Genius appears to be totally random but, in fact, is not but is a result of consistent deep practice. Apprenticeship is a valuable tool in gaining skill because it requires a constant trying then failing and trying again-- deep practice.
Key Concept: We are myelin beings. The more we wrap our neural circuits the more skill we will have.
Key Terms: Myelin beings
Apprenticeship
Skill
Making Connections: We have control over what be become. We are not left to be the product of fate but rather the product of our own decisions. The decisions we make while singing will determine what kind of singers we will be.
