Caitlin Craig 1/30/14

The first ten minutes of my voice lesson with Brianna was spent solidifying the music for the 50 minutes of my senior recital. We went through and discussed the running time of each of the sets and she also gave me some different options to think about.

Beginning with our vocalizes, Brianna reminded me that released doesn't mean that we're relaxed. She asked me to wave my arm and say "Teacher, Teacher!" to feel the energy in my body, and then the tracheal tug before we began some descending 5 note vocalizes on a raspberry to loosen my tongue and help me to enter the pitch from above with ease. These were successful, and I felt a release in the sound and my body. We then continued this exercise but with a "thheee"it seemed to work.  Next we moved to the octave 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 on "thhee" and did quite a few repetitions moving up and down the keyboard.  We then moved to the 8-5-3-1 on "thhee".  I then realized that the "thhee" in this case wasn't really helping release/open my jaw and the space between my back teeth, so I asked if I could switch to a "see". This helped me get the sensation that I've been working on with Cindy. I felt like my jaw was released into "the scream" position and I felt like the sound was free of nasality on a good handful of them.

In the second half of my lesson Ali and I went through the complete song cycle of "The Bad Little Child's Book of Beasts".  I have been spending a lot of time on 3-4 of them so there were a lot of problems with my jaw getting tense with the ones that haven't had a whole lot of practice, but on the ones I have been practicing, I felt moments of release in my jaw and the open space between my molars. Although these moments weren't throughout the entirety of each song, I'm still excited to see that my practice has been making some difference. Although, I am aware that I have a very long way to go.

The take-aways that I gathered from this lesson were:
1. I need to continue practicing the release in my jaw
2. Space between my molars (keep soft palate raised, as this helps me keep my larynx low)
3. And maintain energy in my body

My goals this week are to continue to practice in a way where I feel like I'm the life of the party, and be creative and in my practice. I need to continue to also test more than review. And watch myself in the mirror so I can see and establish a better sensory awareness. And last, I would like to have one song memorized before next lesson.
