Emily F. masterclass 12/3
Jake Spjute: Your breathing was low but I couldn't tell if it was all the way around or just "pooching" in front. I wanted to see your back to see if the ribs were expanding. I noticed the first note seemed to be from your mouth. That's a tough one to start on! Timbre is well-balanced but seemed a little pushed today. I noticed an improvement on that last high note, though! It had way more back space and ring than it has before--good job. I felt like you could still let your emotion come out even more, because it looked like you were doing a lot of thinking. Cindy asked you to move your mouth to the "magic unicorn horn of sound" place, take the "L" off of the first note to practice, and not "make" the space with your mouth. Lots of good work today.
Taylee Beckstead: That first note is so hard, but it needs more space. When you get to "morbide" there is lots of resonance and space and power, but the "in" is just lacking. I thought your expression was quite a bit improved since even last week. There was a definite sense of longing in it. Cindy asked you to get your body doing something specific so that you don't think about your breathing or what you need to "make" your body do, but just let it happen. I have to say, when you sat and braided your hair while you sang, I found the song quite moving! It was like hearing your lovely voice for the first time. Your natural, authentic voice reached me in an emotional way. I didn't think about the quality of your sound or what you were doing or anything critique-wise, I just listened and felt. It was a really great moment. Good work today!
Laura Berg: Timbre was more consistent today than sometimes. You had good ring in your sound. Your neck looked like it was working harder than it needed to. I was a little puzzled today. So much was great in your singing (diction, timbre, breathing, expression), but the things that needed improvement weren't clear to me. I just couldn't quite figure it out. Sorry I don't have much to say. Cindy had you point to keep your arms busy and to give you a clear direction for what you were communicating. It helped your expression especially.
