Sam TC ch. 7

Sam
Chapter 7 Summary: When talent hotbeds spring up it is sometimes the result of a single momentous even that motivates certain people to develop a certain skill. It is possible, however to ignite a talent hotbed even without one great individual breakthrough to get things started. As long as the person trying to develop a certain skill has a specific, rewarding goal and is surrounded by important primal cues that motivate improvement essentially any talent can be acquired. It is very important that the student has a clear vision of his goal in mind in order to maintain high motivation and therefore achieve steady and lasting improvement. It is also important that students are well disciplined and receive correction when it is needed. In the end, self-discipline is much more important than intelligence and will have a far greater impact on the given student's final destination. When students are challenged, properly motivated, and have their mistakes corrected they can even change their whole character.
Key Concept: In order for skill development to be thorough, subjects need to be surrounded constantly by primal cues, which motivate them to work diligently and become successful in their endeavors. This can be achieved by continued emphasis on important goals and necessary correction when mistakes are made.
Key Terms: Ignition, Primal Cues, Signals
Making Connections: This chapter focused a lot on the importance of self discipline. As a voice teacher it is really important to instill this quality in students because you can't be there when you're students are practicing. If they are well disciplined, however, they will not only practice, but they will practice right. Another important thing highlighted in the examples from this chapter is constant emphasis of the end goal. When students are reminded often of their great potential it is easier for them to find the motivation they need to practice and work hard.
