Mariah's Master Class Critiques
Shalayna
Breathing: There was some bucket breathing throughout but mostly balloon breathing which added to the fullness of the sound. It seemed that Shalayna had an extra little exhale of breath after some phrases. She could use this extra air to help during her phrase instead of saving some and dispelling it at the end.
Intonation: She was very in tune.
Timbre: I would describe her timbre as big, mature and vibrant throughout the piece.
Diction: I would have liked to hear more diction as I could not understand many of the words.
Expressiveness: She had very good facial expressions to express the piece. She could work to express more with her voice and body.
Master class: Shalayna was able to improve significantly during master class. Shalayna was able to add a lot more diction and expression with her voice which allowed the audience to understand the words and overall meaning much better. Her clarity and focus for the song increased as well.
Shalayna's performance was lovely and fine-tuned greatly through master class. She might consider singing without holding on to the piano. While this was not necessarily a bad thing, standing a bit away from the piano may add some confidence and help the audience picture her more in the world of her song.
Jake Spjute
Breathing: There was quite a bit of bucket breathing.
Intonation: Some of the high notes were a tad shaky and there were a few flat notes throughout, likely caused from the lack of balloon breath support.
Timbre: It was a very big, bright and energetic sound.
Diction: Very good.
Expressiveness: He expressed the songs well, but I feel like he could go even further with his expression and have more of a relaxed confidence.
Master class: Through the exercises in master class, Jake was able to add much more depth to his singing. He could work to go even further with the idea of using more lower breath support and resonating inside his mouth instead of opening his mouth wider to create a fuller sound.
Jake has a great voice but seemed a bit tense and strained a few times in his performance.
Elizabeth Tait
Breathing: Elizabeth had some loud and bucket breathing and seemed to not have full breaths.
Intonation: There were no big intonation problems, but she went a tad flat throughout.
Timbre: Her voice was a bit pressed and faint.
Diction: I would have liked to have a lot more diction.
Expressiveness: There needs to be more expression as well through her face and voice.
Master class: When Elizabeth spread her arms and lowered her shoulders, it was instantly better. Her sound and presence were much more confident. Her timbre was a lot richer and beautiful, and she was able to get rid of the buzzy sound after some practicing with the exercises.
Elizabeth was able to improve a lot in this master class. She started out with some tension, but when she lowers her shoulders and maintains that confident posture, her timbre is excellent.
