Chapter Summary: Excellent coaching is often not the stereotypical idea of yelling loudly at players when something is done well or incorrectly. Instead, it is an effort toward giving the student or player specific information on how to correctly carry out an action. In Gallimore and Tharp's study of John Wooden's coaching technique, their data showed that very little of his coaching included statements of praise or disappointment but mainly focused on giving his players targeted information that would help them to succeed. In another study by a group at the University of Chicago, 120 highly successful people were questioned about who they were taught by in the beginning of developing their skill. The majority of these people stated that they learned from teachers who were loving and fun but who were also of average ability. Wooden's technique builds skill through deep practice. Coaching love ignites the trigger of energy needed for deep practice.
Key Concepts: Targeted information is more valuable than praise or reproval. Deep practice techniques and an inspiring atmosphere are both needed to build skill effectively.
Key Terms: talent whisperer, coaching love
Making Connections: I need to work on limiting discouraging thoughts and instead replace them with ideas about why I wasn't able to accomplish what I was trying to do. I need to think of specific information that can help fix the problem. I need to practice in a way that helps motivate me to want to learn and develop my singing more and not get discouraged from practicing.
