Chapter Summary: Talent hot beds do not only occur through one big ignition experience. Sometimes they can be built from the ground up. This example is shown through the growth of students in KIPP schools. When they first arrive, many students are very far behind in education and most have no desire to go to college. The school constantly sends the students signals to succeed. As often as they can, teachers talk about college to the students. They encourage hard work in the fact that everything in their school has to be earned. The overall goal is college. This goal is constantly being nudged toward the students until they finally grow to have the personal goal for themselves. These students did not come to the school wanting to go to college or having had some big experience leading them to succeed. They slowly were influenced by the constant signals and growth through school to obtain a disciplined character and driven to go to college. Ignition can be grown.
Key Concepts: The process of ignition can sometimes be a slow process instead of a sudden burst of motivation. A person can be gradually influenced to develop a goal toward something.

Making Connections: If I want to develop more in my singing, I need to remember that every detail matters. I need to set a specific goal and constantly remind myself of that goal and how I am going to work toward it.
