Mariah TC 4
Chapter Summary: There are three rules to successfully practice deeply. Rule one is to break up a skill you are trying to learn into steps. For example, as a singer, you would first try to get a sense of the song you are learning by listening to it or singing through it. The next step for this rule would be to split the song into sections (or chunks). And finally for this rule, you practice each of these sections very slowly until you can sing them very well at this slower pace. The second rule is to repeat it. Spending time in deep practice makes all the difference. You have to build myelin through repetition. Rule three is learning to feel it. You need to learn to feel when you are practicing deeply and performing well and when you are not.
Key Concept: There are three rules of deep practice: chunk it up, repeat it, and learn to feel it.
Key Terms: HSE, Chunking
Making Connections: I need to apply these three rules to my practicing. I need to stop just singing through the song and, instead, learn to break the song apart, work sections slowly, and develop a sense of when I am succeeding and when I am not.
