Chapter Summary: Talent hotbeds are often ignited through the example of one who has done something extraordinary. Such is the case in the little Island of Curacao, which doesn't have anything really special about it besides their incredible Little-League Baseball team. The fire began when country native, Andruw Jones, surprised the world when he hit two home-runs in a World Series game. Since then, Curacao has become a hotbed not only because of primal cues, but also through its disciplined culture, top-notch coaching, supportive parents, national pride, love of the game, and deep practice. They have kept the motivational fire lit, because they are surrounded with cues that help them believe that they can do it: from the field on which they play, to the real-live baseball heroes with whom they associate with. Language also has a very powerful effect on the ignition switch. Motivational language, such as "You are awesome!" is not enough to ignite a person. Instead, language that recognizes and affirms the struggle and praises effort is much more affective. The chapter described a study that was done with children who were told to put together challenging puzzles. Those who were praised on their efforts were much more motivated to work hard to figure out the puzzles and enjoy the process then those who were praised on their intelligence. Moreover, the Z-Boys would not have been able to be as successful in their skateboarding career if it weren't for his verbal cues and guidance. The way we speak to those of which we have influence over can have a powerful affect on their motivation.
Key Concept: When we are surrounded by cues that push us to work harder, and when our efforts are acknowledged and praised, we begin to get a sense of who we truly can become.
Key Terms: ignition, words
Making Connections: The words I say have a deep affect on the people I have influence over. Rather then giving "empty" praise, I need to instead not give praise until it is deserved through the efforts of that person.
