Brooke Myers TC Chapter 5 Summary

Brooke M TC chapter 5 Summary- Deep practice requires ignition.  They found in many hotbeds of talents that passion, effort and motivation were key. In McPherson's study he found that the simple question of "how long do you think you;ll play your new instrument?" was the answer to how young music students progressed in there lessons. Those children who said they would play their instrument long term outperformed the short term group by 400%.  Motivation is key to this process. If we have motivation for a certain project then our brain will place more energy in that project. Primal cues help us in our pursuit to get better. When we see someone who is better than us that primal cue then tell us "better get busy". It knows that it will take a lot of work to become as good as that one person. Or in the instance of the children who run fast a primal cue is sent saying "your behind-keep up!" Ignition helps us give energy to the things we are passionate about.

Key Concepts- perception of oneself is vital to how we will turn out in our life. Better get busy

Key Terms- Ignition, Motivation, Primal cues

Connections- I realized during this why it is that our voice teachers ask us to go look up professional singers and listen to them sing our assigned songs. It is because they are better than us, we see that and a primal cue of "better get busy" ignites in our brain!
