Emily F. TC chapter 5 summary

Emily F. TC chapter 5
Chapter Summary: There are primal cues that ignite and motivate us. When enough of these cues are thrown at us by life, we naturally respond and are potentially motivated to do great things. One of these primal cues is future belonging. We see something we want to be, or maybe somebody we want to emulate, and we find motivation to do what we need to do to be that person we want to be. A powerful idea that determines the level of success an individual will have in his or her chosen field is that of commitment. Knowing that we have a long-term commitment to something gives us the appropriate fuel to be able to deep practice for as long as we need to, to excel. The example of Tom Sawyer made me chuckle because it sounds like just a big case of reverse psychology. And really, reverse psychology is just another name for primal cues that motivate! Scarcity, safety, and future belonging all push us to get what we want.
Key Concept: "(1) talent requires deep practice; (2) deep practice requires vast amounts of energy; (3) primal cues trigger huge outpourings of energy."
Key Terms: motivational fuel, ignition, future belonging, automaticity, primal cues
Making Connections: I tried to think of what cues brought me to where I am today. I tried to remember when I decided that I really wanted to sing. Just as in the book, it seems like it was just always there, but I do remember a few times that were ignition points. I hope to have more experiences of re-ignition. Being a student and seeing slow progress at times can be frustrating. I'd like to be inspired and have that "better get busy" feeling.
