Amber TC chapter 3
What seems like instant genius appearing in sports or literature has more focused practice behind it that we are aware at first glance. Tons of material on the developmental years of the Bronte sisters turned up to show many years of practice that began with infantile publications for themselves and all kinds of borrowed concepts from other sources as they developed and came of age as writers. The amazing Skater kids that burst on the competition scene in the early 1970's were full of years of risk taking focused practice on concrete when they couldn't hit the waves with their surfboards. The renaissance artists were immersed and honed by constant daily focused skill refinement in their trades as apprentices associated with craft guilds. Myelin building activities were ever present in the developmental processes of all three groups groups.
Key Concepts: There are thousands of hours of focused development or practice behind apparent sudden genius. "Myelin doesn't care about who you are. It only cares about what you do."(p.96). "Skill is insulation that wraps neural circuits and grows according to certain signals"(p. 113).
Key terms: Skill, Signals, Lords of our own internet.
Making connections: Students should just give it a darn series of try and fail sessions before they decide whether or not they can really do something. Students should have an environment where correction isn't devastation. A little positive nudge can sometimes go a long way.
