The Talent Code: Chapter 10, “Tom Martinez and the $60 Million Bet”
Emily Cottam
Chapter Summary: When first coaching/teaching a student, developing a relationship and learning not only the skillset of your student, but also knowing their level of motivation and commitment, their learning style, and the quality (not necessarily the details) of their personal lives is just as important and helpful. Starting with the basics, even with a “professional” can help one to determine all of the above qualities in a student. “Sixty percent of what you teach applies to everybody. The trick is how to get that sixty percent to the person.” --Tom Martinez
Key Concepts:
Developing a connection with the student is the first and foremost thing a coach/teacher must do. This paves the way for proper coaching that is specific to the student’s needs.
Key Terms:
Coach/Student relationship
Connections
Making Connections: Although I don’t have any current plans to teach music in the near future, I can apply this to my own lesson times with my vocal and piano teachers by forging a relationship with them so that they can understand my needs as a student with greater speed/effectiveness. If I open up to them about my learning style and respond in such a manner to show them what works for me and what doesn’t, my lesson and practice times will become all the more efficient.
