Taylee. Chapter Summary: Because amazing talent is so "awe inspiring", we think that the story of how someone got to that point needs to be just as mind blowing. Any professional from any field got to where they are by practicing. They may not always recognize their preparation as practice, but that's what they were doing. In the examples given in the book, deep practice was showcased particularly well in the Z-boys scenario. Their practice in the swimming pools wasn't just convenient, but it was a more compressed and challenging version of the half pipe. They were even practicing before they started skateboarding. Although surfing is a different skill, there are similar actions between both sports. Therefore, myelin is still being increased. If circumstances aren't just right, you can still practice, it will just be done differently. Our bodies can't possibly prepare us to be perfect at everything from the get-go. We can only obtain desired skill through the action of that skill.
Key Concept: The body cannot be prepared for everything, but we can train it to do anything through practice.
Key Terms: Skill Nature vs nurture.
Making Connections: My genes provided me with the essentials to be a singer: functioning lungs, working vocal tract, etc. If I want to be a good, or even great singer, I need to activate those things in a correct and productive manner, over and over again.
