Jaron Putnam Chapter 9 Summary TC

Jaron Putnam Chapter 9 Summary:

Summary: All great talent whisperers have 4 virtues. The first virtue is a matrix in their particular skill. This means hours, and hours, and hours, and more hours, in working on myelinating their own teaching nerve endings. They have practiced their craft and know it inside and out. The second virtue is perceptiveness. This means they are watching constantly and know how to deliver the message to each student. "They are listening on many levels." its not just one or two things, they have gained a perceptiveness that allows them to correct and help in a very deep and meaningful way. The third virtue is a GPS Reflex which gives the teacher the ability to know what the next step is in the teaching process. They do this not in a rude or demeaning way. Its just a matter of fact thing that always keep the student moving. The last one is theatrical honesty: The teacher has a way to connect with the student. This seems similar to the last chapter talking about Mrs. Mary in having the gift to connect and help students to love what they are doing. It's about life. Not about music, or math or whatever it may be. "Good coaches support the desired circuit."

Key Concept: A master teacher develops specific skills to help them in teaching. All of these skills are developed to help the student myelinate nerve endings in the right way.

Key Terms:
The Matrix
Perceptiveness
The GPS Reflex
Theatrical Honesty

Making Connections:

I loved the quote "I don't teach Math, I teach life." I like the idea of having an infectious personality as a coach or teacher. What I need to do is observe teachers who have this quality and try to emulate it.
