Caitlin Craig TC Chapter 7

Chapter Summary: Creating a talent hotbed is illustrated in the example of KIPP schools.  Mike Feinber and Dave Levin built an idea around what their ideals of their project were.  It later became the basis of their Knowledge is Power Program.  They took all their resources and stole the best techniques, tasks, and learning modules from each to produce their own program.  Their talent hotbed is ignited by the vision of attending college one day.  The teachers refer to college all day long, in return the students are thinking and pondering about it all day.  They are constantly building circuits and fixing bad behaviors in front of the whole class.  Unity is an exaggerated foundation of the whole program: the children walk in lines, and carry their binders at a certain degree, and even respond to the teacher in unison.  This primal cue of belonging to a group is exaggerated and drilled into their brains daily.  In return the KIPP program has an 80% success rate of students attending college.
Key Terms: impulse control, attention to detail.  I think this chapter is a repeat of the previous one.
Key Concepts: Attention to detail is what determines one's success.  Stopping the school, to point out a mistake, and correct it, just as deep practice encourages.  The constant visual and aural reminders of college are what sparks the interest of young elementary school children to pursue college degrees.
Making Connections: This was an interesting case study of building a talent hotbed.  Although the KIPP program seems strange and militant, I can see the primal cues woven throughout, and can understand their influence on the students' success.  I think one thing I can take from this is to envision my ending goal, and live it, speak it, dream it, and practice deeply in order to achieve it.
